Stassi my partner, has an example of why it is so important to know these wonderful plants which nature has provided us which help and strengthen us naturally.     The story goes:

The things we do.. I was working in the agricultural fields about 80 Km from Ciudad Obregon in Sonora, Mexico. Needless to say, the life of a field worker in those fields in those days was very rigorous, and being so far out in the country food was also a scarcity, unless you were going to live off what you were picking that season(like watermelon, sesame seed, onions...etc). So, my considerate amigos with whom I was working with told me about the plant you see in the picture adjacent. It's name in Spanish is Verdo Lagas. Unfortunately for me they told me its funny name which was a slang term which sounded the same called "Vergas Largas."

I of course collected some immediately as it was growing everywhere and cooked some up. I found its taste pleasant. I ate it often when I would come across it. The problem occured when "los Patrones" had the yearly festival for the field workers - by this time they included me.  We all went for a sumptuous meal at a very special restaurant in the Big City 80 Km away. All of us in whatever fancy clothes we had.

We got ready to order and each invitee was asked his choice of entrees that they would like. Now, being the only Gringo there everyone was curious as to what I would order so all of a sudden when the Camarero asked me for my order you could hear a pin drop.

So, I asked for the Bifsteak and a side of Patatas fritas y como verdura (for a vegetable)  I asked for "Vergas Largas" Now the whole place stopped as if time stood still for here we all are in the very fancy "City" Restaurant and I just asked for "a side order of Long Penises" yes you got that right a plate of long dicks. The waiter now had the cara (cheek) to ask, me in very  loud   clear   voice, where he was supposed to find this delicacy?  I replied "crece por ahi" meaning it grows everywhere just go to the fruit kiosk next door and get some.  Well all of a sudden everyone even the bosses recognized the joke was on me and the whole place erupted in laughter as the waiter said "si senor de inmediato"... right away.
You see the importance to know your plants and their proper names? If nothing else...
